Review: Torchwood 2.1 - Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

Here’s my review for the first episode of Torchwood Series 2. Conveniently, this year they are showing the episodes in the US a mere two weeks behind those in the UK. Stand by. This is going to be a long one. I loved this episode. Let’s get started, shall we?
Episode: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang by Chris Chibnall
Rating (1 to 5): 4.8
Alien Tech: Tosh’s new device? Captain John’s wrist computer (or Wrist Strap.) That personalized bomb and the thing it came out of.
Who kissed whom? The Fish kissed his hostage at one point. Captain Jack/Captain John (2x). John kissed Gwen to poison her.
Who Died? The Fish was killed by Jack. The mugger was killed by John. Captain Jack (it didn’t last).
Jack on the roof? Yep. That’s where he fell from.
Ianto’s Witticisms: “My pleasure, unless you’ll be making sushi.” “Is more fun when he’s around, though.” “As long as it’s not in an office. Some fetishes should be kept to yourself.” “Remind me never to get on your bad side.”
What do we learn? While Jack has been gone (and they had no idea where) they’ve gotten organized. Ianto dumps bodies in the bog. “Captain John” and “Captain Jack” have known each other before…and they have to introduce themselves to each other. John says that the Time Agency has been shut down, and that there are only seven of them left. Captain John likes blonds. Gwen led the team while Jack was away. There is someone named Grey that John has found who means something to Jack.
Doctor Who References:” -I found my Doctor. -Did he fix you? -What’s to fix?” The fact that Jack can never die.
Favorite bits: Bloody Torchwood! “-All I’m saying is you’re speeding and there are children. -Well, if kids are out at Midnight they’ve got it coming.” Owen blowing on his gun after shooting the car they are chasing. Jack’s back! And now…a bloke walks out of the rift. “Did I mention I’m armed?” “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope!” The Old West standoff in a bar…and then the kissy-fighty greeting. “-I need a drink. -I thought you’d never ask.” “-I was a good wife. -I bet you were.” Gwen’s fake surprise about the engagement ring. “With eyes like yours, you can call me Vera and I won’t complain.” Tosh and Owen’s conversation in the warehouse. “You touch her again and I will kill you.” John calling Ianto “Eye candy.” John’s double surprise. The whole team is still alive, and they feel like shooting you now. Ianto and the Stopwatch! Grey? Who’s Grey?
Observations and Musings:
Jack has returned just in time to save the day. …And it looks like he came in the back door. “Here and now, that’s what’s important.” Hm…sound like anyone else we know? Like say…the Ninth Doctor? Jack’s making the moves on both Ianto and Gwen. Also, interesting to notice that Jack’s facial injuries have cleared up rather quickly. Jack had a bit too much fun with his “I can’t die” speech. Tee hee. This episode also gives us a bit more of an insight into Jack’s past. Apparently there is someone named Grey (a son?) that has been found. As we see John in the muckle huge trailer at the end of the episode, I’m thinking that we will learn more about this in the future.
When Jack runs off with the SUV, Ianto doesn’t even pause before he calls a taxi. So, are we looking at a bit of Tosh/Owen this series? Or, are they just having a bit of fun conversation in that warehouse? Ah, Gwen. “No one else will have me” eh? Actually, the undercurrents are rampant in this episode. There’s even the part where John suggests that they all have an orgy, and for one second Ianto actually thinks about it. And the Jack/Gwen conversation followed by the Jack/Ianto date conversation.
New Tech alert! Tosh has a portable computer thingy that can scan for alien Tech, etc. Anyone want to take bets on how may seasons they get to keep it before it starts getting lost, etc? “Thirsty now.” Really reminds my of Evil!Willow’s “Bored Now.” Oh, and not only is their SUV labeled “Torchwood,” so are their guns. The team’s usual connections via the com system seems to have become invisible this year. Are they implants?
Well, that’s all I have this time. Same time next week?
