Reaction Post: Torchwood 2.9 - Something Borrowed

This is the Reaction Post for Torchwood series 2, episode 9: Something Borrowed. So, what did you think of the episode? My usual long meandering thoughts on the topic are past the spoiler barrier.

Hey! Gwen actually manged to get married. And then they retconned everyone. Oh my.
Oh, my head is in a whirl. Where to start? It’s a Gwen-centric episode, so I suppose that I’ll start with her. Who organized her hen night? I mean, really, a stripper dressed like a policeman? And she would be out hunting with Jack right before she was supposed to be at her own party. Trust poor Gwen to get bitten by a thing that would get her a weird pregnancy right before her wedding. But even though Jack actually stopped the wedding at the correct interval the first time, it eventually went on. Jack got to dance with the bride when Ianto was being DJ and Tosh and Owen were dancing. Interesting how it took a moment for them to hear Ianto trying to cut in. Ianto, the wedding fairy.
Rhys. Poor Rhys stuck in the middle of all this insanity. It’s a darn good thing that she didn’t make him take that Retcon before, isn’t it? Else, how would they explain the pregnancy? And we ended up meeting Gwen and Rhy’s family. I’m guessing that they don’t have siblings? At least Banana Boat survived. Good to finally see him after hearing about him all this time. But anyway, Rhys had to use Owen’s pet alien tech to save Gwen and then try to kill the baddie that looked like his Mum with a chainsaw. He had quite a day. (Good thing that Jack showed up when he did.)
We got more Ianto backstory. Ianto’s father is a Master Tailor! Ianto also has good taste in wedding dresses.
Tosh got to be more assertive than usual, or at least more confident. It was interesting to see her out of her usual milieu. She did look really nice in that dress. Even Owen had to comment. It’s good to remember sometimes that the shy-seeming Torchwood Tech has a big gun. Really, I just like to see our folks deal with normal society.
Owen actually gave his favorite bit of tech to Rhys to use on Gwen. And he did ask Tosh to dance. Did you notice that he had a flower pinned to his t-shirt?
John Barrowman got to play a baddie for a bit. That must have been entertaining. I don’t expect that he’ll be able to play a different character very often in the series.
Jack has a tin of photos. From the look of things, he was married once. I’m guessing that it was sometime in the 1920s to go by the wedding dress. I liked the pictures of him in the different outfits.
Now, it turns out that William Thomas (Geraint Cooper a.k.a. Gwen’s Dad) is no stranger to the Whoniverse. He played Mr. Cleaver in the Doctor Who episode “Boom Town” and Martin in “Remembrance of the Daleks.”

Just watched. Way to mess with emotions. The episode was really funny and yet I spent a lot of time worrying about Gwen and Rhys. But I have to say the writing is what makes the one of MY Shows. There is always one line that makes me blink and really laugh. Thank goodness for Tivo ,the pause button, and the eight second rewind.

Hi Beth! *waves* I loved how they had to retcon everyone in the end. Normally it’s the newly married couple that doesn’t quite remember the wedding, this time it’s the other way around.
