Reaction Post: Torchwood 2.10 - From Out Of The Rain

This is the Reaction Post for Torchwood series 2, episode 10: From Out of the Rain. This episode was written by Peter J. Hammond, who wrote Small Worlds from series one. I feel that I should have perhaps watched this episode from behind the sofa, as it was on the freaky side. Anyway, my rambling thoughts on this episode are behind the spoiler barrier. Come and tell me what you thought of this one.
Hmmm….I really didn’t like the feel of this one. It’s the same fellow that wrote that one about the Faeries last series, so maybe I’m just not big on his style. *shrug*
So, were the ghosts in the room the ones that actually took the tickets? (The ones that Pearl was peeking at.) We know what happened to the folks in the hospital, at least. Did the people in that car actually open the window and sit still while each of their “last breaths” were stolen? That Ghostmaster fellow really had funky teeth, didn’t he? What originally gave that troupe the powers they had, I wonder. I mean, the ability to disappear, etc. For that matter, where did that flask come from in the first place? Were the Night Travelers all supernatural in some way or related to the Rift?
Also…do you know how important rare film canisters are? That whole implication about what might be out there just made me cringe. What is out there somewhere are lost films and episodes of Doctor Who. At least, that’s what we hope. That’s just me and my soapbox, though.
A couple of thoughts about Jack in this one: Who exactly sent him looking for the Night Travelers? How many times did he die during his time with his troupe? When did all of this fall in his timeline? Why did he hear the music first?
I totally knew that Owen’s lack of breath was going to come up as soon as the whole “last breath” thing was explained. Good to see that he still has wound continuity with that hand.
This one really got to Ianto. He used to go the the Electro with his father when he was a kid. At least he managed to save one of those final breaths. Good job on grabbing that flask in the first place while the baddie was concentrating on Gwen.
Tosh didn’t really have much to do this week. She was just stuck in front of the computer. I wonder if Pearl was the reason that The Sea was registering on her computer. Nothing that Gwen did particularly sticks in my mind either. I remember her being there with the others, her peeking around a curtain, and her fight with the baddie. That’s about it. I think my brain must finally be going. Then again, as usual, I’ve only seen this episode once.
Wow. My reaction post is really short this week. Maybe it’s that I’m a wee bit freaked out about next week. Or perhaps it’s just that this episode weirded me out a little bit. I suppose that I should have gone and hidden behind the sofa. What did you all think of this one?

I’m with you on this one Elisa. This entire epi hardly made any sense at all for me. Why did the Ghostmaster need the last breaths of all these people? What good is an audience that is completely catatonic? (Take it from a performer, such a group would hardly be good for the ego). Also, Jack’s jumps in logic as to how to eliminate the ‘ghosts’ seem to come out of no where. There is absolutly no explanation for it.
I need a little bit more logic for my stories.

This episode (and Hammond’s ep. last season) felt like a bad Neil Gaiman ripoff. And they violate the rules of the Whoniverse - there should be no magic. Everything has to have at least a perfunctory “scientific” explanation. (The witches from the Shakespeare episode are a good example.)
Plus, it just felt like none of the characters got much to do.

Eric J, I do believe that you’ve hit the nail on the head there. Well done!
Elisa Jenkins, as you say. A bit misty in the logic department.
