Reaction Post: The Sound of Drums

This is the Reaction Post for Doctor Who series 3 episode 12: The Sound of Drums. It is part two of a huge three-part finale. There is so very much more I could say here, but to be safe I’m sticking everything behind the spoiler barrier. One episode left!

I believe that I now understand what my mother means by something being “too exciting.” I don’t know about you folks, but having just seen the episode I’m sitting here pondering random bits of information. It looks sort of like this:

The Master killed the president!

Laser Screwdriver?

Oh, cool, they used U.N.I.T.!

Etc.

As usual, I will try to process this in a slightly more coherent fashion for those of you playing at home. Firstly, I just want to say that I predicted how our three heroes would escape. Yay, me. I actually got one right. Now I’m wondering where that drumming is coming from. Is The Master just completely bonkers or is something else going on? Well, I suppose I should say: is something else going on, too? It was lovely to visit the department of backstory this week. I loved seeing Gallifrey, and it was nice to see that the outfits of the folks there still look like they did back in the classic series. That whole mobile phone conversation between The Doctor and The Master was also very illuminating. I feel really badly for the poor TARDIS. Kinda cool that The Doctor could still hear her, though, yeah? While I’m at it, I’m also worried about Martha’s family. Oh yeah, and The Doctor, who is now old…but is also now *really* pissed off. Where did those little floating balls come from, I wonder. And Mrs. Saxon. How does she fit into all of this? So many questions. For every tied up loose end (so *that’s* why The Doctor never sensed him before and so *that’s* why The Master is even alive) there is another question.

Some good bits: The portable perception fields. Yes, The Doctor *is* brilliant. Loved his analogy, and the little conversation between Martha and Jack afterwards. The short conversation about Torchwood. I could have told you how The Doctor would react to that one. Too bad the Torchwood crew was sent off on a wild goose chase. Jack’s in charge of all of Torchwood these days, eh? Good thing he had a quick comeback, as The Doctor is not Torchwood’s biggest fan.

Well, I hope that they manage to save the day. One week left.

*ahem* Drums. Drums in the deep. They’re coming.

WOW! I’m with you Elisa. It’s still just a bit too new to process everything. That conversation between the Master and the Doctor was WAY COOL. Last week it was obvious how they were going to get out of it. This week…geez….how the heck are they gonna get out of this one???? *bites fingernails*

  2. The Vig Says:

I loved the fact that The Master is not The Doctor’s brother !

Maybe Martha will use the vortex manipulator to go back in time and alert Rose? If there are still Bad Wolf signs, this could be useful. But then again, I think their would have been reports by now if Rose were to make an appearance.

  3. Elisa Says:

    Oh, and Jelly babies!
    Sorry, just remembered.

I dunno, MKE. I’m scared for The Doctor.

Lots of great conversations in these episodes, don’t you think, The Vig? What might the final ep bring us? Who can say?

Originally I liked The Doctor’s reaction to the whole Torchwood bit, but then I got to thinking-

didn’t Billie say she was working for Torchwood in the parallel universe, when she and The Doctor said goodbye?

eh, maybe he just had more faith in Billie to keep things honorable.

    just a thought, is all.

  5. Elisa Says:

    Hmmm…good thought there, meg.

Perhaps Rose’s Torchwood is sort of out of sight, out of mind and Jack’s Torchwood is the same one that lost him Rose? Dunno.

    Thanks for stopping by!

I’m still not sold on the new Master. Of all the Master’s attributes, “wackiness” has never been among them. He’s a bit too Jack-Nicholson-as-the-Joker for my taste.

On the other hand, I loved the episode, so it’s not detracting from my enjoyment too much.
