Reaction Post: The Sarah Jane Adventures - Warriors of Kudlak (part 1)

This is the Reaction Post for The Sarah Jane Adventures series one - Warriors of Kudlak (part 1). As per usual we are left with a worrying cliff-hanger. They love doing that to us, don’t they? Well…I suppose that it’s the tradition to have cliff-hangers in the Whoniverse. Le Sigh.
If you’d like to join me for my usual disjointed reactions to this episode, click past the spoiler barrier…if you dare!
This time around, Sarah Jane is investigating a mysterious disappearance. During the course of her investigation she discovers that the problem is a bit more widespread than that. And by the time the truth is unraveled, Luke and Clyde are stolen, too. Argh! Cliff-hanger! In other news, apparently Sarah Jane has been practicing her Jiggery-Pokery. The Doctor would have been fair proud of her atmosphere analyzing machine. It was quite his sort of thing. I love the Sonic Lipstick. It doesn’t seem to have as many settings as the Sonic Screwdriver, but it’s certainly useful.
Maria’s expression when Sarah Jane tried to use current slang was priceless. And she’s “work experience girl.” It makes her sound like a superhero sidekick. Which…I suppose she is.
Luke is still not feeling like he’s fitting in. Mind you, how old is he now? A few months old, maybe? He’s trying to figure out jokes, rather like Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Except Luke has the advantage of emotions. Not that Luke seems to feel that it’s an advantage. He doesn’t even understand why games are supposed to be fun. If Invasion of the Bane is anything to go by, he really does have excellent hand/eye coordination. The whole thing with Combat 3000 just makes it more obvious.
Clyde is trying to teach Luke about humour and slang. It’s a valiant effort, but it’s going to take a bit longer, I think. Especially if they are trapped somewhere off world. Oh dear.
Hmm… This whole “laser tag being used to choose warriors” thing is rather reminiscent of The Last Starfighter. Do they expect us to believe that there is a kid named “Lance Corporal?” Is it any wonder that the disappearance of a kid with a military rank for a name is how this investigation began? Sigh.
It’s a good thing that I don’t have to wait too long for the next episode.

I believe the kid’s first name was Lance and Luke called him “Lance Corporal” as an attempt to make a joke from his name. Sarah Jane really let them have it over that because the kid’s father had died in Iraq and she didn’t feel it was an appropriate joke. Of course Luke felt terrible that he might’ve hurt Lance’s feelings. Hopefully he and Clyde will catch up to Lance and Luke can apologize.

lisa-marie, and here we see what happens when I watch these things at 1am. I somehow did not catch that Lance’s last name was “Metcalf.” I got the joke part but not quite the leap of logic that created it.
*feels dumb now*

Then again, wasn’t Lance Guest the star of The Last Starfighter? So you’re 1am connection still has some validity.
