Reaction Post: Last of the Time Lords

Ouch! My brain! This is the reaction post for Doctor Who Series 3 Episode 13: Last of the Time Lords. This is it. This is the end of series three (which begins in the USA on Friday.) No new Who in the UK until Christmas. What did you think? For my thoughts, click past the spoiler barrier.

What a ride this series has been! And now, my brain really hurts. No, seriously. I’m amazed that I can think well enough to type. Well…here goes..

So…is Jack the Face of Boe? It would explain the whole “great secret” thing, but weren’t there other to Boe-kind at some point? In the year 200,000 The Face of Boe was supposed to be pregnant as I recall. How exactly would Jack end up a big head…especially since about 150 years have only given him a few grey hairs. Plus, The Face of Boe was telepathic. Though, come to think of it, he did refer to The Doctor as his “old friend.” Curiouser and curiouser.

Isn’t it nice to have a Temporal “undo” function? I think that would come in mighty handy. It’s also nice to see that The Doctor managed to get the TARDIS back to normal after its time as a paradox machine. Too bad she doesn’t get a nap. Poor TARDIS.

Well, it looks like the folks at The Mirror got it half right. Martha has left The Doctor after spending “the year that never happened” traveling the Earth. It seems that she will be popping in and out of the show in future (and rumor has it that she may appear on Torchwood. We’ll just have to wait and see on that one.) She even sort of confronted The Doctor about the “ghost in the room.” Martha is quite the gal! (And I liked the fact that she checked up on Thomas and Doctor Docherty.)

Gotta love The Doctor’s psychic field. Did anyone else notice that he could work it a bit like The Bad Wolf worked with the Time Vortex? Sometimes it’s good to be telepathic, eh? I feel so badly for him. Of all the Time Lords to survive, it had to be his former friend turned sworn enemy. Even then, The Doctor didn’t want him to go and leave him alone once more. Who knew that being 900 years old turned you really tiny? At least he had a wee suit to cover him while he was in the cage.

Lucy Saxon. Hmm… Okay. Obviously spousal abuse was going on there. There was that whole black eye thing and the spiteful masseuse discussion. She shot The Master, but was it she that picked up the ring at the end? I don’t think that we’ve seen the end of either Lucy or The Master.

So…the funeral pyre. I thought, “hmmmm…phoenix…I’ll bet that The Master will return.” My husband thought, “Hmm…Return of the Jedi.”

Um…Titanic? Since when is the TARDIS an iceberg? And he just fixed the poor ship! I’m with The Doctor on this one. What!?! Well, I’m looking forward to “Voyage of the Damned.” What did you all think?

I thought it was a great episode and end to the series. I love the way they seem to be having whole series arcs being played out gently. There was the whole Torchwood thing last year and now Saxon… class.

I do think Jack ends up being the face of Boe, it made instant sense when he said that. I was sat in awe thinking how clever a plot twist that was. If he’s lived so long there could be numerous ways to explain the big head thing, telepathy etc.

I’m glad Martha will still be in it occasionally, and she’d be great at Torchwood. Does the speculation start here about a new assistant though?

The aged doctor was brilliantly done. I liked the fact he had a little suit on too lol.

The Master will definitely rise again somehow, they wouldn’t lose the opportunity to bring back the Doctors nemesis. Phoenix from the flames works perfectly!

I can’t wait for the Christmas episode. So are we to assume the Tardis is the real reason the Titanic sunk? Lol

EEEKKKK! Oh. My. Gosh. Brain is on overload! Way too much input! Where to start!

Jack the Face of Boe! Well it would explain a lot. Since he dies in the year 5 billion+ it shows there are limits even to the time vortex.

Lucy Saxon. That is one creepy chick! I agree we haven’t seen the last of her or the Master. That ring she picked up had to be significant. Something like the watch was. My thought is that the Master had this planned all along as a last ditch way to save himself. It wouldn’t be the first time he faked his own death.

OMG! The Titanic! And after all that trouble that Nine went through NOT to get on board it! Wait a minute…I thought not even the assembled hordes of Genghis Kahn were supposed to be able to penetrate the TARDIS? And a measly little ship does it? She must still be weak after the paradox machine incident.

Martha’s Gone!!! Yeah! Sorry guys, I just never warmed up to her. But who do we get next?

I loved how the references to Rose continued right up to this episode. Let’s hope they continue to do that next season. Can’t wait for the Christmas epi. Should be a winner!

  3. John Says:

Loved the season, but I do have a question. What are the songs that were played in the last few eps. they are so familiar but I just can’t place them.

  4. Eric J Says:

I’d give it about a 7 out of 10. Really didn’t like “If you believe in Timelords, clap your hands.” And after “One Year Later” and the masseuse shenanigans I expected The Master to surrender to the Cylons. It also pretty much guaranteed a reset button. Oh, and Gollum!Doctor looked pretty ridiculous. (Or should that be Dobby!Doctor?)

But The Master was great fun, Jack as The Face of Boe makes more sense than I care to admit, and I’ve got my suspicions about Lucy’s real motive in shooting The Master.

So when does Torchwood start in the U.K.?

  5. Elisa Says:

    John,

From “The Sound of Drums”: Rogue Traders - Voodoo Child

From “Last of the Time Lords”: Scissor Sisters - I Can’t Decide

  6. Elisa Says:

Eric J, I’ve heard that Torchwood series 2 begins in the UK in January, though I’ve not heard an update in a while.

  7. Elisa Says:

    Is it Christmas yet?

Jack as the Face of Boe…maybe that will be the “Bad Wolf” of next year?

  8. Erik Says:

Hand picking up the ring…does anyone else think of the end of the ’80s Flash Gordon movie?
