Reaction Post: Daleks in Manhattan

Welcome to the reaction post for Doctor Who: series 3 episode 4 - Daleks in Manhattan. My full-fledged review will appear after this episode airs in the U.S…sometime this Summer.

Spoiler warning!

Okay, then. Daleks in Manhattan is part one of two, so I’m thinking that I will have more to say next week. But for now, here’s what I thought.
(cue the rambling)
It seemed to go very quickly. When we reached the end, I sort of felt like “It’s done already?” I want Frank to survive. He seems nice. I was impressed that the Doctor Who team managed to get so many people with believable American accents. I liked Tallulah. (Maybe it’s because I have a thing for early 1930s musicals. So, that totally Busby Berkeley-esque overhead fan shot made me happy.) The Doctor’s realization that the glowing brain-looking thing came from Skaro was really well done. It was interesting to hear Solomon say “I’m not going to lose anyone else.” That’s a sentiment that The Doctor can agree with. I’m actually kind of surprised that The Daleks didn’t realize that The Doctor was right there in the room with them for the great unveiling. I suppose that they were a bit busy at the time. I’m looking forward to some more Doctor/Dalek interaction next time. Oh, and kudos to Martha for recognizing the word “Dalek.” Speaking of Daleks, I wonder what The Emperor would have said about all of this. I suppose that The Doctor and Martha are on one last detour on the way home?

Well, that’s all I can think of off of the top of my head with one viewing. Obviously, there will be more next week. What did you think?

Those were believable American accents? Not to an American. :-)

Interesting the Daleks being called “The Masters.” Do they have a hidden ally?

  2. Elisa Says:

Compared to some I’ve heard, Eric J, they really are. (le sigh) Tallulah was totally Helen Kane.

Ooo. Good question. Mind you, that’s what The Controller called the Daleks in PoTW. If that throw The Master into the mix next week, I think that The Doctor might explode.

Loved Tallulah (”with 3 h’s”). She was adorable, and much braver and more loyal than I expected. I also desperately want something to be done for her honey, Laslo (spelling probably not right, but my heart is there).

So, will Laslo and Frank make it? Will Martha ever learn to dress in period costumes? Will there ever come a time when her race truly makes a difference? Who will the next Doctor be? Oops, I’m getting ahead of myself there…
