Question: Who Should Play The 11th Doctor?

Before I even begin, let me start by saying: Don’t Panic. There has been no official word about when David Tennant might be leaving the show, merely the usual rumours. I’m curious, though. If you were the casting director for the show, who would you hire? Who do you think should play the 11th Doctor? I’m only interested in folks that could actually do the job if they got the call, so no one who has passed on, or just wouldn’t fit the part. Well? What do you think? I have consulted with the IMDB to provide you with some suggestions, but please feel free to think of some suggestions of your own.
Folks that you might find on the casting couch:
- Erik Hoard (He’s an actor, and currently available to move to the UK. I’d miss him…but then I could say I knew The Doctor.)
- Hugh Grant (He’s played The Doctor in a spoof, and didn’t do a terrible job.)
- Mark Gatiss (Another person who has played The Doctor in a spoof.)
- Clive Owen (Well…he seems to be in everything else.)
- Michael Praed (I…just think he’d do a good job.)
- Viggo Mortensen (I know. He’s not British…but still…)
- Eoin McCarthy (’Cause I felt like adding him to my list.)
- Sean Bean (That would be interesting to see.)
- Gerard Butler (Phantom of the TARDIS?)
- Ioan Gruffudd (He’s from Cardiff. He wouldn’t have far to travel.)
Now I see why casting directors tear their hair out. I find myself being so blinded by the fact that I want David to stay, that I’m having trouble choosing. May I just choose all ten of them? No? *sigh* Alright then. I can’t choose Viggo, as he isn’t British. Erik isn’t British either. Charlie Cox and Daniel Radcliffe are too young. I guess I’ll have to go with Michael Praed. I believe that this is a sign that I never got over watching him play Robin Hood.
Alright, it’s your turn. Who do you think should play the 11th Doctor?

Right now, since I’m watching Jekyll, my vote is for James Nesbitt. On the other hand, I’d really like to hold out for him playing either Roj Blake or Avon in a remake of Blake’s 7.
I also wouldn’t mind a return of an older Doctor, more like the 1st and 2nd. Don’t have any suggestions there, though.

Almost forgot - since he’s not playing Spock, like he should be, Tobias Menzes (Brutus from “Rome”) would make a good Doctor.

If it weren’t for House being so huge, I’d say Hugh Laurie.
But he’s a bit tied-down right now….

Eric J, I totally agree with you about James Nesbitt. Wow, he could do a great job.
Yes, they should allow for the possibility of an older Doctor. My second choice would be Michael Praed. He did a great job on the Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. Unfortunately I think RTD said in an interview after David came on board that he invisions The Doctor as always 30 something.

Personally I think it would be fun to see Sean Pertwee as the next Doctor - a second-generation Doctor would be pretty cool, doncha think?

Sean Pertwee would be interesting, as would Sam Troughton, Patrick Troughton’s grandson who stars in Robin Hood (Patrick Troughton was in the original Robin Hood series) and has also been in a film with Billie Piper. So, that would be an interesting confluence of events if he were also to play the Doctor at some point.

Excellent suggestions, all.
A second generation Doctor would be fun. I’m glad to see that The Vig agrees with me on Michael Praed.
James Nesbitt, eh?
