Question: Scariest Episode So Far?

by Elisa

To go along with yesterday’s post about the Fear Forecasters, I bring you the question: Which episode of the new Doctor Who do you think is the scariest? I mean, for full-on, behind the sofa, white knuckle scary which episode has your vote? As usual, I will now remind you of the episodes so far:

1. Rose
2. The End of the World
3. The Unquiet Dead
4. Aliens of London (1)
5. World War Three (2)
6. Dalek
7. The Long Game
8. Father’s Day
9. The Empty Child (1)
10. The Doctor Dances (2)
11. Boom Town
12. Bad Wolf (1)
13. The Parting of the Ways (2)
Special: Children In Need
Special: The Christmas Invasion
1. New Earth
2. Tooth and Claw
3. School Reunion
4. The Girl in the Fireplace
5. Rise of the Cybermen (1)
6. The Age of Steel (2)
7. Idiot’s Lantern
8. The Impossible Planet (1)
9. The Satan Pit (2)
10. Love and Monsters
11. Fear Her
12. Army of Ghosts (1)
13. Doomsday (2)
Special: The Runaway Bride

If you listen to my mother on this one, she would say most of the second season is the scariest. The Fear Forecasters have given their only 6 to The Impossible Planet. After much debate, I’m going to have to go with The Empty Child. All of those gas mask people saying “Mummy?” at the very end of the episode gave me shivers. Rose falling out of the sky didn’t help. I suppose that I should say The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, but The Doctor Dances was much less scary in my opinion. Frickin’ scary gas mask people. (shiver) Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel comes in second, by the way. So, what do you think? Which episode is the scariest?

  1. Collin Says:

I think I will go with you and say “are you my mummy?”

I am 34 and I don’t generally get spooked by Dr Who any more, but this gave me the screaming heebie jeebies!

Found you via a technorati link to Snow Patrol by the way. :)

  2. Erik Says:

I also have to agree with The Empty Child. I was loving how freaked out I was getting! The image of the gas masks, the phones ringing, the great lighting of the episode, the fear in the girls eyes and, of course, “Are you my mummy?”. And while The Doctor Dances was not as frightening, the moment when they realized the tape had ended…I’m getting goose bumps right now thinking about it. :-)

  3. Elisa Says:

I am also 34. So, that makes sense to me. :)
    Heebie Jeebies. Most assuredly.
Maybe it’s the “body fear” element that The Empty Child brings with it.
Thanks for letting me know how you found me, and thanks for stopping by, Collin.

  4. Elisa Says:

Erik, you’re right about that moment where the tape ends. Yeek! “This is its room.” So far two folks agree with me about the scariest ep. Yea!

  5. The Vig Says:

Empty Child would also be my pick, although Tooth and Claw had its creepy moments.

  6. Elisa Says:

I will always remember the end of The Empty child, and Rick’s reaction to the lack of the next episode.

  7. Big Nick Says:

Sorry but you are all wrong. The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit double bill are the scariest. It was like Hellraiser meets Event Horizon!

  8. Elisa Says:

And they had the perfect freaky voice for the beast. All hail Gabriel Woolf! You have the right of it, my friend. Those episodes freaked me out. Perhaps I must re-think my choice. Hmmm…
