Question: Favorite Version of The Master?

This week’s question assumes that you have watched up through “Utopia” in series three of Doctor Who. It also hopes that you have seen some of the Classic series, but that’s about as much hoping and assuming as one little question can do. So, I’ll just come out and ask you: Which version of The Master is your favorite? The Doctor’s nemesis has reappeared. Do you prefer a Classic Master or a newer model? That’s it. Pretty straight forward. And to be helpful, I have included a list of actors who have played this Time Lord Baddie.
Masterful Regenerations:
- Roger Delgado (The original)
- Peter Pratt/Geoffrey Beevers (The dying Master)
- Anthony Ainley (The body of Nyssa’s father that The Master stole.)
- Eric Roberts (The Master who fought the 8th Doctor in the TV Film.)
- Sir Derek Jacobi (Chan The first version of the new series Master tho.)
- John Simm (The current Master…and he’s a loony.)
- A version I did not mention (From a book, an outside adventure, or someone I just plain missed.)
This is a difficult question. Some really great actors have played the Master over the years. I am going to choose Anthony Ainley, but I rather suspect that is because he is the one that I remember best from the old series. I especially remember a sword fight between he and the 5th Doctor. My second choice would have to be Sir Derek. Yes, he was only The Master for a couple of minutes, but when you are that good an actor…that’s all you need. Well, that’s my choice. Do you agree with me?

It has to be Sir Derek. He was so ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT for just those very few minutes. Who else could have pulled that off? He portrayed every bit of evil, malice and nastiness that the Master stands for all in less than two minutes!
Now THAT takes a ‘master’ (pun intended)!

Sir Derek (for the malice) and John Simm (for the looniness).

I agree with Aline! Sir Derek made me shudder when he became aware of who he was…

Sir Derek by far (although I always did love Roger Delgado)! I really wish he could’ve stuck around a bit longer! Love. Him.

Ooo! A Sir Derek consensus so far. It just goes to show you how much a great actor can do with only a short amount of screen time.

What about poor old Gordon Tipple?
He played The Master in the TVM before he transformed into the snake creature.
