Question: Favorite Second Season Episode?

Well, now that all of the second season of Doctor Who has aired in the US I have a questions for you. What was your favorite second season episode? (I know…you’re not surprised.) Yes, I know it’s a difficult question. There were many excellent episodes this time around. Feel free to talk about your least favorite episode as well. There are fourteen-ish episodes to choose from.

As usual, to refresh your memory, here are the episode titles:

Special: Children In Need
Special: The Christmas Invasion
Special: Attack of the Graske
1. New Earth
2. Tooth and Claw
3. School Reunion
4. The Girl in the Fireplace
5. Rise of the Cybermen (1)
6. The Age of Steel (2)
7. Idiot’s Lantern
8. The Impossible Planet (1)
9. The Satan Pit (2)
10. Love and Monsters
11. Fear Her
12. Army of Ghosts (1)
13. Doomsday (2)

My least favorite episode this time around is Love and Monsters. Even ELO couldn’t save this episode for me. The first part was good, but things started annoying me towards the end. I liked Elton, though.

Okay. I’ve gone away and thought about this seriously, and I’ve decided that my favorite second season episode is The Satan Pit. This was a really difficult decision, as there were so many fabulous episodes this time around. I loved almost every one. Doomsday comes in a close second (I’ll be posting the review for it on Saturday). Actually, there are so many in third place that I can’t believe I finally chose a number one. The Satan Pit won out because of the wonderful music throughout the episode, and the places that The Doctor is forced to go. It was interesting to see his moments of introspection and to watch him encounter someting that he wasn’t willing to deal with. Okay, it was also that whole speech while he was hanging in the darkness and Rose’s take charge attitude. So, there you are. My favorite episode. Which one is your favorite?

I’d have to say that “Idiot’s Lantern” is my favorite, just because of one throw-away comment about the Doctor being the King of Belgium…. every single time I see the episode, I laugh at that one. A close runner-up would be “New Earth”.

  2. Elisa Says:

I loved Idiot’s Lantern. Good choice.

  3. Erik Says:

No question, “The Girl in the Fireplace”. I was an absolute mess by the end of it. May be my favorite Who episode of all time, we’ll see after I watch it again.

I actually enjoyed “Love & Monsters” quite a bit and liked what they tried to do, but I must admit I am a bit biased as I have a serious thing for Shirley Henderson.

There really wasn’t one I didn’t like, but “Tooth & Claw” was the most disappointing to me as I heard so much good about it before seeing it and it just seemed rather average. Still had much I loved, like the Doctor’s “pseudonym” at the beginning. ;-)

All in all, January 16th can’t get here soon enough.

Oh, and my favorite part of “Idiot’s Lantern is the way the Doctor and Rose say “Hi!! when the door opens. I rewound and played that back many a time and laughed each time.

Girl in the Fireplace is Chris’s favorite, too. Another of the reasons why it was hard to choose a favorite this time around. How can you go wrong with clockwork robots? I loved that part of Idiot’s Lantern. I also love when the Doctor flew off of the handle.

I’ve pre-ordered the DVDs. Have you?

  5. Voga Says:

Hi, I think girl in the fireplace was one of my favourites, along with tooth and claw. But saying that Billie Piper looked hot in the satan pit, well she looks pretty damn hot most of the time.
I help run a business that sells new series Doctor Who stuff and we now ship overseas so you can get your hands on a clockwork robot if you wanted. Just click on voga and that will take you to my blog.

Enjoy watching series two is fantastic.

  6. Elisa Says:

Voga, I see that you’re in Edinburgh! I *love* Edinburgh! Anyway, did you like Empty Child/The Doctor Dances? (same author, you see.) That’s why I can’t wait for episode 10 of series three.
…and you’ll be hearing from me if I can’t find a clockwork robot at the Con this weekend.
    Cheers!
