Question: Favorite New Series Director?

by Elisa

Hello again. This week I am wondering about directors. Who is your favorite new series director? Do you have a favorite? I’ve watched all of the Doctor Who: Confidentials, and I’ve really enjoyed watching directors talk about their episodes. Well, really just watching them work. So, I sat down and made a list of all of the directors so far (I know. Big surprise.), and it turns out that Euros Lyn has directed the most episodes at this point. He has a whole 8 to his credit (if you count the Children in Need Special as an episode) by the end of the second Christmas special. This might explain why I see him so often in behind the scenes shots. Not sure if you have a favorite? Well, here’s a list to help you out.

1. Joe Aherne - (Dalek 1.6, Father’s Day 1.8, Boom Town 1.11, Bad Wolf 1.12, The Parting of the Ways 1.13) - 5

2. Keith Boak - (Rose 1.1, Aliens of London 1.4, World War III 1.5) - 3

3. Brian Grant - (The Long Game 1.7) - 1

4. Graeme Harper - (Rise of the Cybermen 2.5, The Age of Steel 2.6, Army of Ghosts 2.12, Doomsday 2.13) - 4

5. James Hawes - (The Empty Child 1.9, The Doctor Dances 1.10, The Christmas Invasion, New Earth 2.1, School Reunion 2.3) - 5

6. Euros Lyn - (The End of the World 1.2, The Unquiet Dead 1.3, Children in Need Special, Tooth and Claw 2.2, Girl in the Fireplace 2.4, The Idiot’s Lantern 2.7, Fear Her 2.11, The Runaway Bride) - 8 (if you count the Children in Need Special as an episode)

7. James Strong - (The Impossible Planet 2.8, The Satan Pit 2.9) - 2

8. Ashley Way - (The Attack of the Graske Interactive Special) - 1

9. Dan Zeff - (Love and Monsters 2.10) - 1

Well, I’ve decided that my current favorite Director is Euros Lyn. He always ends up with quirky episodes, and even on Fear Her (my least favorite of his episodes) I still really enjoyed both the visual style and the feel of the episode. I feel like I could watch three episodes with three different directors, and tell you which one was his without any extra information. That’s my opinion. What do you think?

  1. The Vig Says:

    Another hard question….

Just going off the episode list I would have to say James Hawes. His five episodes are some of my favorites. Especially School Reunion.

That one gets better everytime I see it.

  2. steve Says:

Not sufficiently familiar with the episodes to pick a favorite, but if I was a producer I’d probably go with Euros. Thats kind of like having a director called Dollars Harry over here - money in the bank!

  3. Elisa Says:

Yes, The Vig, I agree. James Hawes would be my second choice. School Reunion *is* very good. “You get one warning, That was it.”

  4. Elisa Says:

Good point, steve! Euros could have quite the handy name, eh?
