Making the Pyrovile

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

This week I went in search of videos as shown on the Official BBC Doctor Who site in conjunction with The Fires of Pompeii. You know, the ones that you can’t see from outside of the UK, and sometimes from within the UK as well. Unfortunately, apart from the two videos that I linked to Monday’s review (The Monster Files and The Big Question) there was only one other video that I could locate on YouTube. On the bright side, that one video is “Making the Pyrovile,” which covers how the baddies for The Fires of Pompeii were created. So, here you are! Enjoy.

Videos From Partners In Crime

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

The Official Doctor Who site has been offering videos to go with each episode from the series this year. That’s all well and good, but if you happen to live outside of the UK, or in some cases inside of the UK as well, you probably haven’t seen these videos. I will be linking some of them to each full episode review, specifically the Monster Files and the Big Questions, but there are generally more videos than that for each episode. They even have the episode available to re-watch for a while. Currently listed under Partners in Crime the official site offers twenty different videos. That’s a fair few, isn’t it? So, I’ve managed to hunt a couple of them down over on the ever popular Youtube so that the folks who have missing out can see them. Enjoy!

John Barrowman in Dancing on Ice

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Generally on Wednesdays I like to post a couple of (more or less) topic appropriate videos. Today is no different.

I’m sure that you are all shocked by this fact. (Hey! I heard that snicker!)

In any case, the first video that I am sharing with you on this particular Wednesday is from the UK’s Dancing on Ice television program. John Barrowman was a contestant on the show. Not too surprising when you consider that he can skate and dance. Oh, and also the fact that he seems to be everywhere these days. This video features his first routine and some of the training that went into it. Apparently he used to ice skate as a kid. He can even skate backwards! I have been ice skating all of once, myself, so I’m quite impressed by all of this. So there you are. Enjoy John and his skating prowess!

State of the Who and The Trailer for Journey’s End

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Okay. At this point this is where we all stand in the series:

Australia: The folks in Oz have finally seen Voyage of the Damned. Partners in Crime will appear on Sunday 6 July.

USA: series four, episode 10: Midnight will not make it to US screens until 11 July for some reason. I mean, another TV channel is celebrating independence day with Harry Potter. I don’t see why the Sci Fi Channel couldn’t celebrate with Doctor Who instead of the Twilight Zone. I’m just sayin’…

UK: The final episode of series four (Journey’s End) taunts us all from Saturday. Remember that it will have a special running length of sixty-five minutes. There was no next week preview at the end of The Stolen Earth, but a preview was posted on the official site. As per usual, that preview has now made its way to Youtube, so I am including it here. By its very nature it is extremely spoilery. Watch at your own risk. Oh. But before you ask, no. It doesn’t answer that question. We’ll all just have to wait together to find out how that particular event turns out.

By Popular Request: Dead Ringers do Torchwood

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Recently I have been asked for some Dead Ringers parodies of Torchwood. As always, I am happy to oblige. This particular video was obviously made during or after Torchwood series one. It’s kind of random and a bit rude, but I’m sure that you’ll see what they’re driving at. I remember seeing John Barrowman’s impression of this Dead Ringer’d Captain Jack somewhere, but I can seem to find it again. I do remember that he was trying to walk the same way. (”Do I really walk like that?”) If anyone remembers where that bit is from, please let me know so that I can hunt it down. Thank you kindly.

Enjoy!

Billie Piper Interview Before Turn Left

Friday, June 20th, 2008

This is the first half of an interview video that is up on the BBC website. The second half of this talk with Billie Piper will be up on the BBC Website after the episode this Saturday. Of course, like all the videos currently on the official site, only folks in the UK can watch them. …And that’s where Youtube comes in. This half of the interview isn’t particularly spoilery, but if you are trying to remain spoiler free for the eleventh episode (Turn Left) you may want to give it a miss. For the rest of you…watch it before they take it down! (Sorry about the video quality, but this was the only version that I could find on our faithful video sharing site. The second half will be up as soon as I can find it.)

Living With the Enemy

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

(Well…I hope that this posts correctly. Keep your fingers crossed. I hear that they’re finally working on the servers to correct the problems we’ve been having. Hopefully I will experience no more “High Load” warnings when trying to post very soon.)

Imagine if you will that the Doctor had to live for a weekend with the Cyberman family. And by family, I mean Mum, Dad, and baby. What do you think would happen? Well, that’s what the folks from Dead Ringers wondered. They invented a reality show called “Living with the Enemy” (at least, I think they invented it. I couldn’t find any record of a television show with that name online) and they got that fellow who sounds just like the Fourth Doctor to play his usual part. As you might imagine, hilarity ensues.

News and Notes of the Whoniverse

billieandlaurencefox.jpg
Billie and her husband Laurence

Paul over at ToyBender has found some Daleks made out of legos online. Definitely worth stopping by to see.

Today I was reading an article from the Canadian Press about the Secret Diary of a Call Girl coming to the US soon, and a couple of important things were mentioned during the last paragraph of the interview with Billie Piper. “Undaunted by the media criticism, Piper has begun filming a second series as Belle, and a third series has been ordered. But she may soon need a body double, she says, because she’s pregnant.” So, from this it looks like 1) there will be second and third series of Secret Diary and 2) it seems that Billie really is pregnant. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Fox!

It turns out that Steven Moffat was offered the job as the new Head Writer for Doctor Who via e-mail! He got this e-mail sometime last Summer, which means that he knew about this when he was at Gallifrey One this last February. That would explain his reaction when he was asked if he might take over some day. Interesting.

Remember that Freema Agyeman is going to be in a production of Little Dorrit? Well, it looks like Torchwood’s Eve Myles will be in the production as well. Oh yeah. And Andy Serkis. I’m thinking that I really need to see this one.

I’ve just received notification that the FAQ at the Official Doctor Who Site has been updated. I went over to have a look, and I discovered this possible good news for non-UK residents - “For Series Four, we have moved to using Flash Video. We are currently not allowed to stream Flash Video overseas without the involvement of BBC Worldwide, however. We are working on a solution to resolve this.” Let’s hope that the solution comes soon.

I have been looking for David Tennant’s interview with Andrew Marr for a couple of days now, and here it is. David talks about playing the Doctor, playing Hamlet, and even playing in one of his earlier projects. Enjoy!

Questions and Monsters

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Over on the official BBC Doctor Who Site they have these lovely little videos that are extras for each of the episodes. The catch is…you can no longer watch any of them if you live outside of the UK. It used to be that anyone could enjoy the extras offered, but that is no longer the case. (Apparently, there are rights reasons now that didn’t exist before.) Thank heavens for Youtube.

The first video I bring you is the first of a series called “The Big Questions.” From the look of things there will be one of these for each of the episodes. They each feature Catherine Tate and David Tennant reading a question that they find in an envelope, and then trying to answer it.

Eccleston on Blue Peter (circa 2005)

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Hi folks! The second half of the Steven Moffat two-parter is on tomorrow in the UK, and “The Doctor’s Daughter” will be making its premiere in the US tonight. While you’re waiting, here is a wee blast from the past. Back in 2005, Christopher Eccleston appeared on Blue Peter to talk about the new version of Doctor Who. Billie Piper was supposed to join him, but she was unfortunately ill that day. On the bright side, they did have a previously filmed interview with her.

Enjoy!

Time Travel and Bedtime Stories

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Today I bring you a couple of completely different videos. This first offering features John Barrowman reading a bedtime story for Cbeebies. This Monday edition of the BBC’s Bedtime Story has John reading a cute little story about a near-sighted dinosaur called Bumposaurus. (According to WHSmith, the book is by Penny McKinlay and Britta Teckentrup, in case you are interested in reading it for yourself.) I actually liked this story a bit more that the other one I saw him read. John even has a wee stuffed dinosaur to keep him company while he reads this time.

Another David Tennant Radio Interview

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

On 14 April 2008, David Tennant appeared on Colin Murray’s BBC Radio 1 show. Some kind person has taken that interview and placed in on YouTube with a bit of a slide show to keep it visually interesting. Admittedly, this slide show isn’t as nice as the last one I found, so don’t feel too terrible if you just listen to the interview while doing something else. As seems to always be the case when Mr. Tennant does and interview, I was certainly kept entertained. Did you know that when you have to come up with a new name to get your Equity Card, as your name is already in use, you have to come up with three names? Well, in this bit of Radio1 goodness you will learn what a certain actor’s other two choices were. And be sure to listen closely for David to quote some Avril Lavigne lyrics towards the end of the conversation.

Enjoy!

The New Doctor Who Trailer…

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I’m still on vacation right now, but I simply had to share this with you all. This is the trailer that the BBC has recently aired for the second half of Doctor Who series four. By its very nature it is incredibly spoilery. So, if you don’t want to know what is coming next, you might want to avoid this video. On the other hand, there is no telling how long this video will remain up. Watch or don’t watch. It’s you choice. (And yes, I am currently restraining a squee about the events depicted in the trailer. How could you tell?)

Enjoy!

David Tennant for BBC Wales

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

So, where do you think that you could see David Tennant dressed as the Doctor, speaking Welsh with a Scottish accent? Why on his recent BBC Wales commercials, of course. The official BBC Doctor Who site recently posted an article about these commercials for all to see. Well, everyone in the UK, that is. Now, someone has finally posted them to YouTube so that everyone could enjoy them. The first one is a bit more like an advert for Wales itself than BBC Wales, or rather it’s quite subtle. The second one includes a fellow doing a crossword puzzle. When he sets down his paper, you can clearly see that the word about the one he’s just entered is “Rose.” I wonder if they did that on purpose. In any case, the second BBC Wales advert has all sorts of references to things that BBC Wales can offer.

Here are both of the commercials. Enjoy!

John Simm Reads for Cbeebies

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

John Simm, known in the Whoniverse as Harold Saxon/The Master, reads Me and My Mammothfor the Cbeebies Bedtime Story in this video. It’s a cute little story. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t mind ending up with a live Mammoth when I was trying to make an airplane.

…I’m just sayin’. Enjoy!
