David and Davina do Mastermind

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

On the 2009 Red Nose Day show for Comic Relief, David Tennant and Davina McCall competed in a special celebrity edition of Mastermind. Predictably, Davina “The announcer of Big Brother” McCall opted to answer questions for Big Brother 2000-2009 and David Tennant chose to answer questions about Doctor Who 1963-now. I won’t tell you who wins, but I will say that I was impressed my David’s knowledge of our show (well…except the one about the drink. I can’t believe he missed that one.) He really is “one of us.” Let me just add that I have no desire to ever appear on a game show like that. My brain would go completely blank. What about you lot?

A Taste of Red Nose Day 2009

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

As you may recall, David Tennant and Davina McCall were to share host duties for this year’s Red Nose Day in support of Comic Relief. And indeed, they did. So perhaps it isn’t too surprising that at one point Davina decided to ask David a question that many of us would have asked in her place. Yes, she asked him for a kiss. In the interest of raising money for charity, David agreed. Davina’s donation was then doubled when she took things a bit farther. All I have to say is…nice dip there, David.

David Tennant Kisses Davina McCall - Red Nose Day 2009:

What do you think of David’s white suit? I think he looks pretty good. Davina’s dress was a lovely shade of red. I don’t think that I could manage to get away with the dress itself. Ah well.

Attention all David Tennant fans! (especially The Vig) The Telegraph is reporting that David Tennant, Patrick Stewart, and the rest of the Hamlet crew will be returning to film their Hamlet in June. Yes, you read that right. They’re going to be filming David’s Hamlet! Apparently it will be more than just filming the stage, but not quite the feature film level. Hamlet will be filmed over the course of two to three weeks. Let the squeeing begin! I can’t wait to see what they come up with, and it darn well better come out on DVD.

Remember how there was supposed to be a K9 series at some point? Well, now we have more information. Park Entertainment’s site has more information for us now. There is no trailer of promo up yet, but it looks like the show will take place in London of the future. There will be adventurous teens, a reclusive scientist, and, of course, K9. What will they be doing? Defending the Earth, of course. I’m not sure when we’ll be seeing the finished product, but I’m very curious to see what it looks like. It will be live action, by the way.

According to People.co.uk, Freema Agyeman may be currently working hard on Law and Order UK, but she isn’t ruling out appearing in Doctor Who again in the future. In the article, she even mentions that she’d like to be on Strictly Come Dancing. Well, it looks like her new show is already doing well. Congrats, Freema!

Before My Laptop Freezes Again…

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Before my laptop freezes up again, like it did a few minutes ago, here are a few more bits and pieces I’ve got lurking in my tabs. Let’s get to it!

First up, here’s a bit from “torchwoodbbcamerica,” who brings us a moment with Euros Lyn, director extraordinaire of Torchwood series 3 among other things, and Eve Myles (Gwen) from behind the scenes at New York Comic Con 2009.

Eve Myles and Euros Lyn backstage @ New York Comic Con ‘09:

Lindsay Duncan, who is soon to play Margaret Thatcher on the BBC, will appear in the second Doctor Who special. Lindsay has done everything from classics like Mansfield Park to a droid’s voice in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I’ll be interested to see what sort of character she ends up playing.

According to SciFi Wire, a Doctor Who one-shot comic book came out today. It’s called “The Whispering Gallery” and features The Doctor and Martha. Has anyone seen it yet? It sounds like it’s quite the story.

So there I was, minding my own business, watching the Super Bowl with my husband and this advertisement came on. I must admit that I was paying attention to something else, and then I heard Christopher Eccleston’s voice and I fell over. (I then commandeered the Tivo remote and watched it again.) Here it is, the official trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Yes, I will be seeing this movie.

Whoniversal Photo Update

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

I’ve been over to my entertainment photos place again (WireImage for those of you who are curious) and I have brought back a crop of photos for your viewing pleasure. To start with, we have a picture of David Tennant on his way out after an evening as Hamlet. I wonder how many autographs he signed in total during the run. Quite a few, I’d wager. Good thing he’s got a scarf on. It looks cold out there.

This next photo is one I turned up of Matt Smith acting in “That Face” from a couple of years ago. It’s nice to see that he’s had a variety of roles. It should stand him in good stead when facing a role like The Doctor. I would, however, like to point out to the character he is playing here that some nice shoes would make a world of difference with that dress.

Freema Agyeman was recently a presenter at the South Bank Show Awards. It looks like success agrees with her, eh? Looking good Freema! I hope that Law & Order: UK turns out to be a fantastic success for you.

I’m posting this last picture, of the beauteous Billie Piper, for a certain friend of mine. I’m thinking that he may kill me, though, when I tell him that the picture was taken at the CBS and Showtime Network’s Winter Television Critics Association Party in Hollywood, California on 14 January 2009. I hope that this picture makes up for that knowledge. She’s looking good post-baby, yes?

John Barrowman- Putting It Together Blooper

Friday, January 30th, 2009

After finding the video of John Barrowman reading a bedtime story on CBBC, I did a bit more surfing about on YouTube and I found this gem. When you see it, you’ll understand why I had to share. Back in 2000, John Barrowman was in a production of “Putting it Together” with Carol Burnett on Broadway. As you might expect, with John Barrowman involved with the production, “Putting it Together” is a musical. In this clip, you get to see some of that singing and dancing. Until, that is, Carol Burnett calls a halt to the show…for a very good reason. How everyone reacts and deals with the problem shows 1) that they believe that the show must go on, and 2) that John Barrowman was a little bit too amused by the situation.

Bedtime Story with John Barrowman

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

I really enjoy the bedtime stories the the CBBC brings to us. How can you go wrong with celebrities who read cute children’s books at bedtime? These short films even come complete with illustrations. John Barrowman has done several of these presentations for us. Personally, I think he enjoys doing all of the voices as much as I do when reading out loud. His stories tend to include either monsters or animals. This time, the book he’s reading is about a group of animals who are making some pumpkin soup, and discover that they are missing an ingredient. What are they to do?

This video will either get you ready for bed, or make you want some nice warm soup. Either way, enjoy!

Videos and Tea

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Today I come bearing another few things that I encountered in my travels as I surfed about on the internet. Firstly, I bring you a link that dudewithak kindly pointed out to me. Have you ever wondered what kind of tea the Doctor would be? Well, if you have, you are apparently not alone. Adagio Teas allows you to design your own tea blends. (I actually made one there for my Nana a few years back.) One of the teas that you may now purchase from them is: Doctor’s Tenth Tea. It is a fine blend of black tea (Irish Breakfast, in fact), banana, and ginger. Jenn Moffat, who designed this tea, also created Noble Companion Tea, a blend of ginger, Christmas, and pomegranate. Now I have an urge to make a rose petal Earl Grey or something for Rose. For Martha, perhaps something spicy like a chai? What sort of tea would Jack be, I wonder. This is a line of thought that I feel The Doctor would approve of wholeheartedly.

Next, I have for you a scene from Billie Piper’s Secret Diary of a Call Girl…which includes Matt Smith. Yep, it’s pretty much what you’d think it is with a title like that. Just a bit more of the future Doctor’s work for you to see.

Matt Smith and Billie Piper in Secret Diary of a Call Girl:

And finally, I have another fan-made music video for you. This one is a bit slower that I usually like, but the song fully pulled me in. Darn you analeian. This is the second video you’ve made that has made me want to run out and buy the song you used. It’s Doctor/Rose-centric, for those of you that care, and the TARDIS has a rather major role.

The Ruby in the Smoke

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

By now you should all be aware that Matt Smith has been chosen as the Eleventh Doctor, beginning filming later this year and finally appearing on UK Television screens on Easter 2010. Or at least, that’s what we understand at this point. For all we know, he could appear in the Christmas special just to surprise us. Who can say?

In the meantime, I’m sure that you are all as curious as I am to see our future Doctor in action. One of the shows Mr. Smith has appeared in is The Ruby in the Smoke. As some of you may know, the star of said show was none other than Billie Piper! So, I went over to YouTube and did a bit of searching. And what did I find? A veritable cornucopia of clips from the show? Yes. The show in its entirety? No. Oh, well. You can always check to see if your local library has the DVD in stock if you wish to watch the whole thing.

The first two videos below contain pretty much all of the parts of The Ruby in the Smoke that contain Matt Smith. Take a look, and let me know what you think.

Matt Smith in Ruby in the Smoke - Part 2:

So, have you not had enough of Phillip Pullman’s The Ruby in the Smoke yet? Here are a series of clips (containing a great deal of Billie Piper) that I managed to track down. (I really need to get my own personal seamstress. Billie’s dresses are lovely in this TV movie.)

John Barrowman at Birmingham Christmas Lights 2008
(From WireImage.com, Photo by Jules Annan)

Have I told you folks about Torchwood Babiez? It’s like a combination of Muppet Babies and the Whoniverse in comic format. You can find it over at tw_babiez on Livejournal. The reason I mention it now in particular is that part 3 (of 4) has just been posted. I’m loving it, and I hope that part four isn’t that many months away.

Speaking of comics, it looks like Sheldon is a Doctor Who fan, or perhaps it’s artist Dave Kellett who’s the fan. Either way, this is the second time I’ve seen the show mentioned in his comic strip.

The Children in Need TV event is on tonight, 14 November 2008, at 7pm. And what can we expect to see with relation to the Whoniverse? Well, apparently we will be treated to a clip from the Doctor Who Christmas special. In addition, there are rumours floating around that the next Doctor will be named during the show. I wonder if they’re actually talking about the name of the Christmas special, which is “The Next Doctor.” Who knows? I guess we’ll find out tonight.

Doctor Who series four is currently playing on BBCAmerica if you want to catch it again. It’s playing on Saturdays at 9(8c).

How did you first encounter Doctor Who? One of the things I haven’t done on this blog for a while is My First Doctor. Who was your first Doctor? Where did you see your first episode? Tell me your story and I’ll post it here. (You can see the previous ones here.) You can either comment with your story, or send me an e-mail using the Contact Me link near the top right of the blog.

A Bit More News

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

(image source: Amazon.co.uk as linked below)

Christopher Eccleston recently did a voiceover for an Amnesty International video about the proposed UK laws that would enable them to detain terrorism suspects for 42 days without a trial. You can watch “Sleepwalking” here.

In this years’ National Television Awards the male and female talent are competing against one another in every category. What does this mean for us? Well…it means that David Tennant and Catherine Tate are competing against each other for the Outstanding Drama Performance Award. (Doctor Who is also up for Most Popular Drama, by the way.) You still have a couple of days left to vote, if you’re of a mind to do so. Slightly more than seven days left until the show.

Digital Spy is reporting that the score for Doctor Who series four will be out on 17 November in the UK. No sign of it in the US as yet. Some of the tracks include: Season Four Opening Credits, Songs of Captivity and Freedom, and Silence In The Library. Yay for Oodsong!

Some other items that are out right now (and coming soon), for those of you preparing your Christmas/Chanukah/etc. lists:
* The Torchwood Soundtrack (US)
* The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete First Season (US)
* Doctor Who: The Complete Fourth Series (US) (18 November)
* Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest (US) (18 November)
* “Torchwood”: Lost Souls (BBC Audio) (UK)

And finally, just a note to remind you all that next month is the Two Year Anniversary of this blog. Wow! I don’t believe it! Stand by for a contest announcement at some point soon.

News of the Who

Noel Clark at MOBO Awards (photo by Ferdaus Shamim from WireImage)

I’m at a conference this week (Internet Librarian in Monterey, for those of you interested.) And so far (*fingers crossed*) my laptop is behaving itself. Mind you, this means that the Sarah Jane Adventures reaction post might be a bit late this week. Just so you know…

And now, the news….
Den of Geek is reporting that the first Doctor Who special of 2009 will be broadcast at Easter. It was co-written by RTD and Gareth Roberts and will be directed by James Strong. Finally some news! Yay!

Billie Piper is now about seven months along, for those of you keeping track, and it looks like she’s doing well.

Speaking of Billie, her Secret Diary of a Call Girl is set to have its first series come out on DVD in the US on 6 January 2009. It looks like the price will be around $29.98.

News and Such

Another glimpse at the filming of the 2008 Christmas Special. (Pic copyright: jules annan, found on WireImage)

Don’t forget: The Sarah Jane Adventures series two starts on Monday! Be sure to check your local listings for times. No word yet on when it will arrive in the US. At least…I haven’t seen anything. Anyone out there know?

If you want a spoiler for the Doctor Who Christmas 2008 episode, you may wish to check out this article over on the BBC website. It’s about Russell T Davies‘ new book and he has intriguing information about what is to come. In case you’re interested Doctor Who: The Writer’s Tale is now available in the UK (it will be available in the US on 13 November 2008.)

You may recall that John Barrowman’s new album Music, Music, Music will arrive in stores on 24 November (no listing yet for the U.S.). If you pop over to the Amazon.co.uk page for the album, you can watch a wee behind the scenes video on the making of the music video for the first single from the album.

Competition Alert!
Have you ever wanted to go backstage on the sets of the three shows of the Whoniverse? Well…your chance may have come. If you live in the UK, that is. (sigh) (The trailer for this chance here.) In order to enter, you need to answer once question that will be announced on the Chris Moyles show on 26 September. Yes. That’s today. You can listen to his show here if you miss the live version. Further, the information will be on the Doctor Who site after the big announcement. This competition supports Children in Need. Good luck all!

And finally, I offer you a very special commercial -

John Barrowman Sings…the Time Warp

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Yes. You read that correctly. This is a video of John Barrowman singing “The Time Warp” from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. (It is quite possible that this video will hurt your brain, depending upon how you feel about said cinema experience. You are officially warned.) This is a stage performance, complete with backup dancers. That’s right..backup dancers.

So…enjoy.

Spoofs and Multiple Doctors

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

As I’m sure you all know by now, I tend to spend a fair amount of time surfing around on Youtube. There’s just so much stuff to look at over there. Today I bring you two videos for the price of one.

The price of one, being “free” in this case…but you get the idea.

The first video isn’t available to be embedded, sadly, but I can offer you a link. In 1979, British television played a spoof called Doctor Eyes. Can Doctor Eyes and Gloria survive the planet Chromokey? It’s a bit of silliness, but worth it for the giggle.

My second video offering today is from the 1985 Children in Need special. All you have to do is watch one of the special guests to know that it’s 1985. He’s dressed a wee bit like Rose’s dad in Father’s Day. Also, I’ve never really thought of the TARDIS as a clown car, but watching this video brings the image to mind. It’s more of a class reunion than a special scene or anything. Still, it’s worth watching for the memory jog. Enjoy!
